Case Study: 18 Months of Solar Power Generation at Fort Knox Self Storage

In January 2015, Australian storage provider Fort Knox Self Storage completed the installation of 240 ReneSola solar panels at its facility in Scoresby, an eastern suburb in the city of Melbourne. The solar conversion was part of a major project to reduce the carbon footprint of the self storage giant. At the same time, the outdated lighting system was replaced with modern energy efficient LEDs.

18 months on, and the system has not only met, but exceeded Fort Knox’s expectations. The 60kW system was installed by Enervest, a Melbourne-based specialist in the design and installation of PV systems, and in the year and a half since, it’s saved Fort Knox more than $13,000 in electricity costs. These savings have the facility on track to completely pay off the installation cost by 2019.

Original estimates were for the system to generate 65% of the facility’s energy requirements, however the current contribution is 72%. At a business as big as Fort Knox Scoresby, that’s equivalent to planting over 3,200 trees, or preventing approximately 850,000km of car travel.

Energy Savings in 18 Months

·         852,507km of CO2 emissions from a passenger car

·         3,279 trees

·         AUD$13,226 in energy costs

Site Manager Ingrid Reyes said, “We’re extremely impressed with the manufacturing quality and efficiency of ReneSola’s panels, and it was a privilege to have Enervest customise the installation for us. Knowing that over 70% of our energy requirements are being sourced from clean renewable energy makes everyone at Fort Knox Scoresby feel like we are helping the environment and contributing towards making the planet a better place”.
